তাছাড়া, অন্যতম বামপন্থী নেতা সিরাজ শিকদারকে বন্দী অবস্থায় পেছন থেকে
গুলি করে ন্যক্কারজনকভাবে হত্যা করা হয়েছিল। সে হত্যার পর মুজিব সংসদে
দম্ভ করে বলেছিলেনÑ ‘কোথায় সিরাজ শিকদার’? আরো ন্যক্কারজনক হলো, হাসানুল
হক ইনু এ সবই জানেন জাসদ নেতা হিসেবে, কিন্তু একবারও তিনি সিরাজ শিকদারের
হত্যার তদন্ত দাবি করেননি। মন্ত্রীর চেয়ারে বসা এবং পতাকা ওড়ানো গাড়িতে
চড়ার শখ অনেককেই পেয়ে বসে। তিনি আওয়ামী লীগের ধামাধরার পথ বেছে
নিয়েছেন।
কেমন ছিল সেদিনের পরিস্থিতি?
খালেদা জিয়া যে সময়টার কথা বলছেন তখন জাতীয় সংসদকে একদলীয় (বিরোধী
দলবিহীন) করার আগে শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান ১৯৭৩ সালের ৭ মার্চ বিনা প্রয়োজনে
একটা মধ্যমেয়াদি নির্বাচন করেছিলেন। সে নির্বাচনে দেশে বিরোধ ও বিভেদ
বেড়ে যায়, যদিও যুদ্ধবিধ্বস্ত দেশটির পুনর্গঠনের জন্য তখন প্রয়োজন ছিল
নিñিদ্র জাতীয় ঐক্যের। প্রধানমন্ত্রী রাত-দিন স্তবস্তুতি আর ফুলের মালা
নিয়ে ব্যস্ত থাকতেন। তাকে এভাবে ব্যস্ত রেখে তার আশপাশের লোকেরা
দুর্নীতিতে সম্পূর্ণ ডুবে ছিল। দুর্নীতির অভিযোগ প্রধানমন্ত্রীর পরিবারকেও
ছুঁয়েছিল।
ফল যা হওয়ার তাই হয়েছিল। অর্থনীতি হয়েছিল প্রায় বিধ্বস্ত। একাধিক
সফরে বাংলাদেশে গিয়ে যা দেখেছি তার করুণ চিত্র বিবিসি থেকেও বলেছিলাম তখন।
কয়েকটি ক্ষেত্রে কলাপাতা জড়িয়ে লাশ দাফন করতে দেখেছি আমি নিজেই। প্রথম
শ্রেণীর এক সরকারি কর্মকর্তা তখন বলেছিলেন, হাফপ্যান্টের অভাবে ছেলে স্কুলে
যেতে পারে না বলে নিজের এক জোড়া ট্রাউজারের পা কেটে ছেলেকে দিয়েছেন।
বাকি এক জোড়া ট্রাউজার তিনি সারা সপ্তাহ ধরে পরতেন। রোববার স্ত্রী সেটা
ধুয়ে দিতেন বলেই সোমবার পরিষ্কার জামাকাপড় পরে তিনি অফিসে আসতে পারতেন।
আমার স্যুটকেসে নতুন এক জোড়া ট্রাউজার ও একটা শার্ট ছিল। সেগুলো বাদামি
প্যাকেটে পুরে পরদিন তার টেবিলে রেখে এসেছিলাম। অনেক দুঃখের মধ্যেও তখন
ব্যঙ্গবিদ্রƒপ ছিল অনেক। একটা কথা প্রায়ই শুনতামÑ ভূগোল বই থেকে ‘পৃথিবী
কমলালেবুর মতো গোল’ মুখস্থ করতে করতে ছেলে জিজ্ঞেস করেছিলÑ বাবা, কমলালেবু
কাকে বলে?’ কমলালেবু তখন মধ্যবিত্তেরও কেনার সাধ্যাতীত ছিল। সে সময়কার
কিছু বর্ণনা আমার একাধিক কারণ বইতেও আছে।
দুর্নীতি প্রবল হলে অশাসন-কুশাসন বেড়ে যায়; এটা অর্থনীতির নিয়ম।
বাংলাদেশে এর ব্যতিক্রম হয়নি। চুয়াত্তরের মন্বন্তরে ৭০ হাজার মানুষ না
খেয়ে মারা গিয়েছিল। নোবেল বিজয়ী অর্থনীতিবিদ অধ্যাপক অমর্ত্য সেন
পরবর্তীকালে লিখেছেন, বাংলাদেশে তখন যথেষ্ট খাদ্য মজুদ ছিল, কিন্তু সুশাসন
আর সুষ্ঠু বণ্টনব্যবস্থার অভাবে ওই সময় দুর্ভিক্ষ হয়েছিল। মুজিব শাসনের
গোড়ার বছর দুয়েক বাংলাদেশের মিডিয়া ব্যক্তিপূজা নিয়েই ব্যস্ত ছিল।
কিন্তু তত দিনে তাদের চোখ খুলেছে, মুখ ফুটেছে। কিছু সমালোচনা তখন তারা করতে
শুরু করে দেয়। দেশের সর্বত্র প্রথমে বুদ্ধিজীবী এবং পরে সর্বসাধারণ
সমালোচনায় মুখর হয়ে ওঠে। দুর্নীতিপরায়ণ আমলাদের উপদেশে মুজিব জরুরি
ক্ষমতা আইন পাস করলেন এবং ৩০ থেকে ৪০ হাজার লোককে গ্রেফতার করে জেলে বন্দী
করলেন।
মুজিবের অন্তিম দিনগুলো
শেখ মুজিব সরকারি মালিকানাধীন চারখানি পত্রিকা (দৈনিক বাংলা ও ইত্তেফাক
এবং বাংলাদেশ অবজারভার ও বাংলাদেশ টাইমস) ছাড়া প্রায় সব পত্রপত্রিকার
প্রকাশ নিষিদ্ধ করে দিয়েছিলেন। লন্ডনে হিথরো বিমানবন্দরে আমার প্রশ্নের
জবাবে এ ব্যাপারে শেখ মুজিব বলেছিলেন, নিউজপ্রিন্টের ব্ল্যাকমার্কেটিং বন্ধ
করার জন্যই তিনি এ ব্যবস্থা নিয়েছেন। সেখানে তিনি আরো বলেন, সক্রিয়
সমবায় পদ্ধতি চালু করবেন, আর জেলায় জেলায় (অবশ্যই আওয়ামী লীগ দলীয়)
গভর্নর নিয়োগ করবেন। ১৯৭৫ সালের ২৫ জানুয়ারি তিনি সংসদীয় গণতন্ত্রকে
হত্যা এবং সব রাজনৈতিক দল নিষিদ্ধ করে একদলীয় বাকশাল পদ্ধতি চালু করেন এবং
আজীবন রাষ্ট্রপতি হওয়ার প্রথম ধাপ হিসেবে নিজেকে সাত বছরের জন্য
নির্বাচিত রাষ্ট্রপতি ঘোষণা করেছিলেন।
রক্ষীবাহিনীর হত্যাকাণ্ড, আওয়ামী লীগ ক্যাডারদের উৎপাত, নাগালের বাইরের
দ্রব্যমূল্য, খাদ্যাভাব ও পুলিশি ধরপাকড়ে দেশের মানুষ অতিষ্ঠ হয়ে
উঠেছিল। এ রকম পরিস্থিতিতে মুজিবের কোন এক স্বজন এক সামাজিক অনুষ্ঠানে
দু’জন মধ্যম স্তরের সেনাকর্মকর্তার সাথে দুর্ব্যবহার করেন বলে অভিযোগ ছিল।
সেটার কারণ ছিল কি না, বলতে পারব না। ১৯৭৫ সালের ১৫ আগস্ট রাতে কয়েকজন
সেনাকর্মকর্তা অভ্যুত্থান ঘটিয়ে সপরিবারে মুজিবকে হত্যা করে। তারা
ধানমন্ডি ৩২ নম্বর রোডে মুজিবের বাড়ি ঘেরাও করলে তিনি টেলিফোনে সেনাপ্রধান
জেনারেল শফিউল্লাহর সাহায্য চেয়েছিলেন। কিন্তু সেনাপ্রধান তাকে কোনো মতে
পালিয়ে যাওয়ার পরামর্শ দিয়ে নিষ্ক্রিয় থাকেন।
অভ্যুত্থান ও হত্যাগুলো কয়েকজন সেনাসদস্য ঘটালেও তারা দেশবাসীর সমর্থন
পেয়েছিল, বলা যায়। বিশ্বময় সংবাদ প্রচারিত হয়েছিল, বাংলাদেশে আনন্দের
স্রোত বয়ে গিয়েছিল, কোথাও কোথাও এমন কি মিষ্টান্ন বিতরণ করা হয়। শেখ
হাসিনা নিজেও বলেছেন, তার পিতামাতা ও ভাইদের হত্যাকাণ্ডে কেউ অশ্রুপাত
করেনি, এর প্রতিশোধ নিতেই তিনি রাজনীতিতে এসেছেন। মনে রাখতে হবে, বাংলাদেশে
ভারত কিংবা পাকিস্তানের মতো কোনো মার্শাল রেস (লড়াকু গোত্র) নেই।
মুক্তিযুদ্ধের ফলে এদেশের জাতীয় সেনাবাহিনী গড়ে ওঠে। এর সদস্যরা দেশের
সব অংশের সাধারণ পরিবারের সদস্য। গ্রামের বাড়িতে ফেলে আসা পরিবারের সাথে
তাদের সম্পর্ক নিবিড়। তাই দেশের মানুষের চিন্তার সঠিক প্রতিফলন
সেনাবাহিনীতেও হয় প্রতিনিয়ত।
শেখ হাসিনা ও আওয়ামী লীগ এসব ঘটনার যেসব বয়ানকে ইতিহাস বলে চালিয়ে
দিতে চান তার সাথে বাস্তবতার তেমন মিল নেই। হাসিনা ও ছোটবোন রেহানা তখন
ছিলেন পশ্চিম জার্মানিতে। পিতার হত্যাকাণ্ডের পর দুই বোন প্রায় ছয় বছর
দিল্লিতে ভারত সরকারের আশ্রয়ে এবং তত্ত্বাবধানে ছিলেন। তারা দু’বোন যা
শিখিয়েছে সেটাকেই ইতিহাস বলে মেনে নিয়েছেন। মুজিব হত্যার জন্য হাসিনা
বহুবার শহীদ রাষ্ট্রপতি জিয়াউর রহমানকে দায়ী করেছেন, যদিও জিয়া
হত্যাকারীদের দলে ছিলেন না এবং সেনাপ্রধান ছিলেন জেনারেল শফিউল্লাহ।
আরো স্মরণীয় হচ্ছে, মুজিব হত্যার পর রাষ্ট্রপতি হন খোন্দকার মোশতাক
আহমদ। ১৯৮৬ সালে বিবিসির জন্য সাক্ষাৎকারে তিনি আমাকে বলেছিলেন,
হত্যাকাণ্ডের পরদিন সকাল ৮টায় একজন সেনা অফিসার জিপে করে এসে আগামসিহ
লেনের বাড়ি থেকে তাকে শাহবাগে বেতার সদর দফতরে নিয়ে যান। ৩ ঘণ্টা পরে
পুলিশ, রক্ষীবাহিনী ও সশস্ত্র বাহিনীগুলোর প্রধানেরা আনুগত্য ঘোষণা করলে
তিনি রাষ্ট্রপতির পদ নিতে রাজি হন। খোন্দকার মোশতাকের ওই সরকার ছিল
সম্পূর্ণরূপে আওয়ামী লীগ সরকার। মুজিব সরকারের আটজন মন্ত্রী সে সরকারে যোগ
দিয়েছিলেন।
খোন্দকার মোশতাককে গদিচ্যুত করে আরেকটি সামরিক অভ্যুত্থানে ক্ষমতা দখল
করেন ব্রিগেডিয়ার খালেদ মোশাররফ ১৯৭৫ সালের ৩ নভেম্বর। তিনি প্রধান
সেনাপতি লেঃ জেনারেল জিয়াউর রহমানকে গৃহবন্দী করেন। ৭ নভেম্বর জাসদ নেতা
কর্নেল তাহেরের নেতৃত্বে সাধারণ সৈনিকেরা বিদ্রোহ করে। পালিয়ে যাওয়ার
সময় খালেদ মোশাররফ সৈনিকদের হাতে নিহত হন ৭ নভেম্বরে। সৈনিকেরা বন্দিদশা
থেকে জিয়াকে মুক্ত করে তাকে আবার সেনাপ্রধান পদে বসায়। তারপর জিয়া
নিজেকে প্রধান সামরিক আইন প্রশাসক ঘোষণা করেন। ব্রিগেডিয়ার খালেদ মোশাররফ
প্রধান বিচারপতি সায়েমকে রাষ্ট্রপতি করেছিলেন। তিনি যত দিন সে পদে ছিলেন
জেনারেল জিয়া তত দিন ছিলেন প্রধান সামরিক আইন প্রশাসক। এটাই হচ্ছে ইতিহাস।
জিয়াউর রহমান মুজিবকে হত্যা করেননি।
কী করে সে ঘোষণা প্রচার সম্ভব হলো?
গত সোমবার প্রধানমন্ত্রী স্বাধীনতার ঘোষণা পাঠ করার জন্য এম এ হান্নানকে
মরণোত্তর স্বাধীনতা পদক দিয়েছেন। রেডিও পাকিস্তান এবং পরবর্তীকালে
বাংলাদেশ বেতারের কর্মকর্তা ও প্রযোজকদের সাথে আমার খুবই ঘনিষ্ঠতা ছিল।
বিবিসির কাজে তারা প্রতিনিয়ত আমাকে সাহায্য করতেন। স্বাধীনতার পরে তিন-চার
দিন চাটগাঁয় ছিলাম। বাংলাদেশ বেতারের চট্টগ্রাম কেন্দ্রের আঞ্চলিক
পরিচালক নাজমুল আলম একাত্তরের ২৫ ও ২৬ মার্চের ঘটনাবলি আমাকে বিস্তারিত
বলেছিলেন।
পাকিস্তানি সেনারা ’৭১-এর ২৫ মার্চ রাতে বেয়নেট দিয়ে ক্যাবল কেটে এবং
কন্ট্রোল রুমের কনসোল ভাঙচুর করে কেন্দ্রটি কেমন অচল করে দিয়েছিল, তার
বিস্তারিত বিবরণ তিনি আমাকে দিয়েছেন। তখন নতুন যন্ত্রপাতি বসানোর আগে
চাটগাঁ বেতারকেন্দ্র থেকে কোনো সম্প্রচার সম্ভব ছিল না। তবে কালুরঘাট রিলে
কেন্দ্রটি অক্ষত ছিল এবং সেখান থেকে শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের নামে মেজর জিয়াউর
রহমানের স্বাধীনতার আনুষ্ঠানিক ঘোষণার রেকর্ডিং আমরা ফরাসি বেতার থেকে
সংগ্রহ করেছিলাম। তাই বলা যায়, শহীদ জিয়ার বিরুদ্ধে গাত্রদাহের কারণেই
সত্য বিকৃত করে অন্য একজনকে স্বাধীনতা পুরস্কার দিয়েছেন প্রধানমন্ত্রী।
ইতিহাসের বিকৃতি আরো গোড়া থেকে শুরু করেছে আওয়ামী লীগ। ১৯৮৬ সালে
বাংলাদেশ স্বাধীনতার পনেরো বছর নামে একপ্রস্ত অনুষ্ঠান আমি প্রচার করেছিলাম
বিবিসি থেকে। সে অনুষ্ঠানগুলোর অনুলিপি মর্যাদাশীল প্রতিষ্ঠান
ইউনিভার্সিটি প্রেস লিমিটেড গ্রন্থাকারে প্রকাশ করেছিল। সে অনুষ্ঠানের জন্য
গৃহীত সাক্ষাৎকারে শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের একান্ত সচিব এবং পরবর্তীকালে
রাষ্ট্রদূত (১৯৫১ সাল থেকে আমার বিশেষ বন্ধু), জমির উদ্দিন আহমেদ ২৫ মার্চ
রাতের ঘটনাবলি বিস্তারিত বলেছেন। তাতে স্পষ্ট হয়ে যায়, সেদিন সন্ধ্যা
পর্যন্ত মুজিব আশা করেছিলেন যে, তিনি তৎকালীন পাকিস্তানের প্রধানমন্ত্রী
হবেন।
তাকে না জানিয়ে ভুট্টো ও ইয়াহিয়া পশ্চিম পাকিস্তানে ফিরে গেছেন শুনে
মুজিব খুবই হতাশ হয়েছিলেন। তিনি জানতেন, পাকিস্তানিরা তাকে ধরে নিতে আসবে।
১৯৯৬ সালে লন্ডনের কমনওয়েলথ ইনস্টিটিউটের দেয়ালে পোস্টারে ২৬ মার্চ
স্বাক্ষরিত শেখ মুজিবের ‘স্বাধীনতার ঘোষণা’ দেখে রীতিমতো অবাক হয়েছিলাম।
২৫ মার্চ দিবাগত রাতে পাকিস্তানিরা তাকে ধরে নিয়ে গেলে, ২৬ তারিখে কী করে
তিনি স্বাধীনতার ঘোষণায় সই করলেন? তার স্বাক্ষরিত সে ঘোষণা কারা কিভাবে এম
এ হান্নানের হাতে তুলে দিয়েছিল?
সত্য বিকৃত করার দৃষ্টান্ত অহরহ ঘটছে এখন। খালেদা জিয়া গত রোববার (২৪
মার্চ) বগুড়ার বিশাল জনসভায় ৩ মার্চ বগুড়ার শাহজাহানপুরে সেনাবাহিনীর
ভূমিকার প্রশংসা করেছিলেন। সেদিন ঘোরতর সহিংসতা ও উচ্ছৃঙ্খলতার সময়
সেনাবাহিনী তাদের শিবির থেকে বেরিয়ে এসেছিল, কিন্তু কোনো প্রকার হস্তক্ষেপ
করেনি। খালেদা জিয়া বলেছেন, ‘সেদিন সেনাবাহিনী এসেছিল। প্রতিবাদী মানুষকে
লক্ষ্য করে তারা গুলি করেনি। এ জন্য তাদের ধন্যবাদ।’
জাতিসঙ্ঘের শান্তিরক্ষা মিশনে সেনাবাহিনীর ভূমিকার কথা উল্লেখ করে বেগম
জিয়া বলেন, ‘সেনাবাহিনীরও দায়িত্ব আছে। তারা শান্তি মিশনে গিয়ে অন্য
দেশের মানুষের জীবন রক্ষায় কাজ করে থাকে। আর নিজের দেশের মানুষকে গুলি করে
হত্যার দৃশ্য তারা চেয়ে চেয়ে দেখতে পারে না। প্রয়োজনে তাদের দায়িত্ব
পালন করতে হবে।’ অর্থাৎ বিএনপি নেত্রী সেনাবাহিনীর প্রশংসা করছিলেন।
প্রধানমন্ত্রী ও অন্য মন্ত্রীরা, কোনো কোনো আওয়ামী লীগ নেতা এবং তাদের
অনুগত মিডিয়া যেভাবে বিকৃত করে খালেদা জিয়ার বক্তব্য প্রচার করেছেন, তাতে
ধারণা দেয়া হচ্ছে যে, যথাসময়ে (রাজনৈতিক পরিস্থিতিতে) সেনাবাহিনী
হস্তক্ষেপ করবেÑ এমন কথাই বেগম জিয়া বলেছেন।
সত্য কথা মুখে আসে না
বাংলাদেশের বর্তমান সঙ্কটের মূল হলো, এই সরকার কিছুতেই নিজেদের অধীনে
ছাড়া সাধারণ নির্বাচন করতে রাজি হচ্ছে না। অন্য দিকে বিএনপি এবং ১৮ দলের
ঘোষণা, তারা নিরপেক্ষ ও নির্দলীয় সরকারের তত্ত্বাবধানে ছাড়া নির্বাচন হতে
দেবে না। বিএনপি এবং ১৮ দলের জোট হরতাল ও অন্য কর্মসূচিগুলো পালন করছে
মূলত এ দাবিতে। ইদানীং সরকারের নির্যাতন, ৩ মার্চের গণহত্যা এবং
পাইকারিভাবে গ্রেফতার করা নেতাকর্মীদের মুক্তির দাবিও তার সাথে যুক্ত
হচ্ছে। ২৭ ও ২৮ মার্চের হরতালের ঘোষণায়ও বলা হয়েছেÑ ‘বন্দী নেতাকর্মীদের
মুক্তি, গণহত্যার প্রতিবাদ, নির্দলীয় নিরপেক্ষ সরকারের অধীনে নির্বাচন এবং
এই সরকারের পদত্যাগের দাবিতে’ তারা হরতাল ডেকেছেন।
কিন্তু প্রধানমন্ত্রী ও আওয়ামী লীগের অন্য নেতা-নেত্রীরা এবং তাদের
আজ্ঞাবহ মিডিয়া কী বলছে? তারা এই বলে ঢাকঢোল পেটাচ্ছে যে, যুদ্ধাপরাধীদের
রক্ষা করতেই বিরোধী দলগুলো হরতাল করছে। আসলে সত্যকে, ইতিহাসকে বিকৃত করা
তাদের স্বভাবে পরিণত হয়েছে। সত্য কথা এখন আর তাই মুখে আসে না।
সাম্প্রতিক কয়েকটি বক্তৃতা-বিবৃতিতে খালেদা জিয়া বলেছেন, ক্ষমতায়
গেলে তিনি এ সরকারের গণহত্যা ও অন্যান্য মানবতাবিরোধী অপরাধের বিচারের জন্য
ট্রাইব্যুনাল গঠন করবেন।’ আমার মনে হয়, আরো একটা কাজ গুরুত্বসহকারে
গোড়ার দিকেই পরবর্তী সরকারের করা উচিত হবে। তা হলো, নিরপেক্ষ ও বস্তুনিষ্ঠ
ইতিহাসবিদদের নিয়ে একটা বোর্ড গঠন। মুক্তিযুদ্ধ যারা দেখেছেন তারা বেঁচে
থাকতে এবং সাক্ষ্য-প্রমাণাদি হারিয়ে যাওয়ার আগেই এই বোর্ড মুক্তিযুদ্ধ ও
পরবর্তী বছরগুলোর সঠিক ইতিহাস সঙ্কলন করবে। অধ্যাপক সালাহউদ্দিন আহমেদসহ
ঢাকা ও রাজশাহী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ইতিহাস বিভাগ মুক্তিযুদ্ধের মৌখিক ইতিহাস
সঙ্কলন করেছিল। সেগুলো প্রস্তাবিত বোর্ডের জন্য অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ
প্রমাণিত হতে পারে।
